THE WESTWIND
JUNE 2008
 ***********
       CATAWBA WEST HARBOR YACHT CLUB
“COME AS A GUEST AND LEAVE AS A FRIEND

         FROM THE COMMODORE:

It is June already and boating season has started out well. The month of May went by fast so let’s hope summer slows down. We have many plans for the summer, so make sure you come and join us at the club.

Just a remainder to all members; you need to clean up after yourselves. This is your club and everyone needs to take care of their own things. If you see something that needs cleaned or replaced, please do it. Don't just walk away and let someone else to the job. Let's make a good impression on the new members.

Now that the dues are discounted, please take the time to talk to your boat neighbors or your friends and get them to join the club. People are only going to join the club if you bring them into our club and show them what a great organization we have. We have many functions still planned for the summer so don't miss them. Check the sign-up sheets in the upstairs hallway by the bathrooms and sign-up for a function. I am sure that most of you still need your hours so sign-up for breakfasts, dinners, or even the Bar.

There will be a Fish Fry on June 28 that the public is welcome too, so pass this on your friends and family and dock mates. Also on July 5, Jon and I will be doing our Steak Fry again. This is a required sign up function in advance.

Jacquee Rutherford and Rita Koepfer are on the publicity committee and they have made up flyers about our club and the club events that they are distributing in the community. If you have a place to put any of these flyers please see one of them or ask me and we will get them for you.

One more thing, Jon and I have purchased a Ben Richmond print that we have hung up in the Bar. We have the raffle tickets for this picture, so if you can sell tickets please see us to get them. The drawing is not until the clambake, so we hope to bring in a lot of money from this raffle. Please help us out.

Until next month, have fun boating! Commodore Kathy Schaefer

             FROM THE VICE COMMODORE

Over the past two weeks, CWHYC has gained 9 new members.  We are very happy that these good people have joined and we look forward to seeing them in the club as often as their time permits.
Please mark your calendars with the following events:
1)  Our official fishing tournament will be Saturday, June 21st.  Dan Holan will head up the tournament.  There will be a trophy for the biggest fish and, who knows, maybe a prize for the smallest, weirdest or ugliest fish.  We need as many fishermen/women as we can get and additional boats would be a good thing.  Let Dan or myself know if you want to join in the fun.  The fish fry will be held on Saturday June 28th.  We need volunteers to help with food prep and frying.  I guarantee you will enjoy this event.  Dan’s fried fish is as good as it gets.
2)  The steak fry is scheduled for Saturday, July 5th.  Jon and Kathy Schaefer will host this event and sign-up sheets will be at the club or you can call the Schaefers with your order.  This is a grill your own steak and we will have plenty of grills for your convenience.  Harbor Estates yard sale is also on the same day and the club will have a tent set up, so bring in your stuff.  Proceeds from the sale will go to the good of the club.
3)  A Pig Roast has been added to the calendar on August 31st.  Heidi Rowe has volunteered to head up this up and Jim Sheehan will be the roaster and carver.  More details will follow.
4)  We have an Island Tour set for September 13th.  Those who have experienced the Irish Drinking Tour won’t want to miss this tour.  Be sure to book your tour tickets early.
Every Friday night we will still offer Club Grub in the bar.  This Friday we will have new items in the bar freezer.  The microwave will be next to the freezer for your convenience.  Ring your item on the register.  If you get in late on Friday and need something to eat – come up to the bar.
Speaking of the bar, PLEASE clean up your glasses, napkins, popcorn baskets etc. and wipe off your table.  We don’t have a cleaning crew yet and it makes closing much easier and faster for the Rear or guest bartender.
Lastly, we will have a breakfast every Sunday until August 31st.  We will need help in the dining room and kitchen (no cooking required, as we have a cook). This is a great way to get work hours in, so be sure to sign up on the sheet posted in the hall at the end of the bar.
Be sure to call me if you have any calendar questions.  As usual, Connie and I look forward to seeing you at CWHYC.
 Gene McKeown

FROM THE FLEET

On May 31 six boats with 14 people made our first cruise to Huron Boat Basin who took great care of us as usual.  Good weather and good water over and back.
Amazingly we had over 30 people for dinner Saturday night at the Huron Yacht Club; almost as many as were at the first membership meeting.  Thanks to HBC and HYC.
It was John Brewer’s last weekend home before deployment and he made the cruise Saturday afternoon for dinner.  I wish him a safe return so he can do this next year.

Dinghy Poker Run:

Dinghy Poker Run, Saturday, July 12. $15 per person (same as last year)
No one, I mean NO ONE is signed up.  So, do I cancel it or do I have it?

9:00 -10:00:     Registration and breakfast at the club for all participants, first card and map of the other three stops
John’s surprise – drinks and card at Gem Beach Marina’s patio bar
3:00        Final card at the beach with snacks and adult beverages
6:00        Opening of the cards and refreshments at the club

The net proceeds from the dinghy poker run are divided among the top three hands
CWHYC Cruises:
Sign up for our other cruises -
Aug 9 – Ford YC for their AYC poker run and regatta
Sept 6 – Leamington for Big 10 weekend
Oct 11 – P.I. B for Oktoberfest

Sign up sheets for dinghy poker run and cruises are in the hall way beside the bar.
We saw gas at $4.39, so cruise with a friend and share expenses so gas is only $2.20.  Such a deal!
If anyone wants to cruise the Sandusky River to Freemont and the FYC during the month of June, contact me.  740-522-2150 (w) or biff@13-inc.com
Be safe out there on the water.

Biff Matthews  ’08 Fleet Captain

  HEAD TRUSTEE

I have made some progress in eliminating our storage garage expenses. Tim, Tony and I installed a door underneath the stairway next to the elevator. We’re also planning on installing some lighting. With some luck, we will be able to store most of our “stuff” in this area. We hope to get rid of some of the stored items at the Harbor Estates garage sale in July.
Unfortunately this past weekend we lost the use of our elevator. Dan Holan is working on this diligently and hopefully it will be repaired by the time you read this article.
The lighting situation in the downstairs dining area has been corrected. Fortunately it was only a few burned out bulbs.
Several members have noticed the ceiling on the upstairs balcony is loose. The trustees are aware of this and it will be taken care of. If anyone would like to get some work hours, see me soon before this job is completed.
Weeds around the clubhouse have been sprayed but it might need another dose. If you see anything else that needs to be done around the club, please see me.

Head Trustee,
Bill Brello

  SUNSHINE

It was nice to see Sandy Athanas at the wine tasting. Way to go Shari, Sandy, and Becky we could not have had it without you girls.
June 14th is Flag Day fly it proudly.
Summer is here at least we have the hot weather. Summer begins officially June 21st.
Our deepest sympathy to Tina Gilliland on the passing of her mother.
Marty Schott had surgery and is doing well. Hope to see him at the Lake soon.
John Brewer left for Iraq on June 4th. Pray for John and his unit for there protection and a safe and quick return home.
Bill Brello and George Barack have retired. I am having a retirement cook out for George Stop Bye on Saturday June 14 from 3-6 at our dock (Gem Beach 7-5).
My Aunt got a mothers day gift that she will never forget. A box was delivered that she had to open outside. In it was a dozen of small boxes with dormant butterfly's in them. With the warmer temperature outside they woke up. With each butterfly she let go she had to make a wish and watch them fly away.
The Yard Sale is July 5th at Dan Holan's lot in Harbor Estates at 8:00. Bring your donated treasures for the yacht club to sell. I can use some HELP in selling. PLEASE COME AND HELP
A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.
 HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

 ***********
        CATAWBA WEST HARBOR YACHT CLUB
“COME AS A GUEST AND LEAVE AS A FRIEND”

  FROM THE COMMODORE:

The Club was in full swing for Derby Day.  Besides the Club members, we had many guests at the Club bidding some money on the horses.  Some of us won, some lost, but fun was had by all.  Thank you Ed and Betty Brewer and all their workers, for a wonderful day at the races.  A delicious chicken dinner was served after the race and then the Razor’s Edge played until midnight.  Thank you, Connie and Gene, for the meal and band.  The bar was full and there was a lot of dancing.
A special thank you to Terre Matthews for finishing the installation of the curtains on the upstairs and downstairs windows.  The new additions provide privacy as well as a warm and finished appearance.
The trustees are working on a few projects that I think will really make the Club look better.  We hope to get these things done and clean out the storage unit.  Gene is almost finished with the new serving cabinet.
The Membership Meeting is May 17, 2008, at 10:00 a.m.  I encourage all of our members to attend this meeting.  This meeting is vital for the future of our Club.  Again, I stress that we need new members and I encourage everyone to please try and bring in a new member or two.  With the high gas prices, stress that the Club would be a good place to spend time with friends and not on high gas prices.  The future of our Club depends on our membership.
I hope everyone is getting their boats in the water and I am looking forward to seeing you at the Club.
 Kathy Schaefer

       IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

PROPOSAL TO SUSPEND BYLAW RULES GOVERNING MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES, FEES, DUES, AND WORK HOURS FOR THE PRESENT YEAR, 2008
  The proposal is to set the annual dues at $195.00 for one year.
  These dues would apply to all categories of members, be it active, senior or social.
  Anyone joining after April of this year would be required to work 20 hours or be assessed $10.00 for every hour not worked.  This would be due at the end of the year.
  Any new member would be asked for a $50.00 application fee.  Upon approval of the application the $50.00 would be applied to the annual dues.  If the application is rejected the $50.00 fee would be refunded.
  Senior members would not be required to perform work hours.
 For those members who have already paid their dues for 2008, they would only be required to perform 5 work hours without penalty.
THIS PROPOSAL WILL BE PRESENTED AND THE RATIONAL WILL BE GIVEN AT THE MEMBERSHIP MEETING ON MAY 17TH.  YOUR VOTE WILL BE IMPORTANT TO THE FUTURE OF THE CLUB.

 FROM THE VICE COMMODORE:

Our first membership meeting of 2008 will be held on Saturday, May 17th.  This will be a very important meeting that you should not miss.  A change in our dues structure will be presented and I think you will like what you hear.  Your comments will be heard.  Plan to stay around for the day. The Bridge is hosting a Membership Appreciation Dinner that evening with cocktails at 6 and dinner at 7.  There will be no cost for dinner.  Please sign up at the club if you plan to attend.
The Kentucky Derby Party was a big success.  We had visitors from Nugents, Middle Bass, Toledo Sailing Club and Toledo YC. The band, Razor Sharp Objects, with a new keyboard player (Nick who sounds and plays like Billy Joel), really entertained us.  They will be back for our Turkey Fry on July 19th.  Incidentally, this will be our next membership meeting.
We may have a cook for our Sunday breakfasts.  If we can hire him, then we will have 12 breakfasts starting on June 1st and ending on August 31st.  We will need 2 members each Sunday to keep the dining room cleaned up, collect money and serve.  If we cannot hire him, we will have fewer breakfasts and will need crews that will cook as well as all the other duties.
As always, Connie and I look forward to seeing you at the club.
Gene McKeown

  FROM THE REAR COMMODORE:

Wow what a great Derby Day! We had a lot of fun with the ponies and danced into the night with Razor Sharp Objects. I must say I am still recovering. Hopefully, we will all be back and at it in no time. I would like to thank everyone who helped out behind the bar for the Derby Day Party I could not have made it through the night without you all. I think we all had a fun time and I plan on us doing it all again real soon. I would especially like to thank those members who helped with the Grasshopper drinks. I am not one who likes to deal with sticky ice cream like drinks, so I greatly appreciate your help. Along those lines, we still have a number of Derby glasses for sale. I hear they make great Christmas gifts.
On the regular front, we are planning some new things at the bar this summer. Per the request of members, I will be trying some new beers this year including Bud Select and Michelob Ultra. Don’t worry; we will still carry the regulars (Bud Light, Bud, Miller Lite, Coors Light, MGD and Pabst). As I have said before, if you think we should carry some particular kind of beer or alcohol, let me know and I will see what we can do. That is about it. I will talk to you in the next Westwind issue.
Jim Miller

FROM THE FLEET:

May cruise -   I will send the Huron Basin dock master our boat information the day after Memorial Day.   If you are signed up for the cruise make sure your preferred phone number is on the list. IMPORTANT - Captains meeting conference call that I'll initiate at 7:00 pm Thursday night before the cruise.  Who is going Friday, and at what time, as opposed to Saturday, and at what time.  Reminder - BYOB and snacks for the dock.  Make your own reservations at HYC now for dinner, if you intend to dine there Saturday night, so they can be prepared for us, which was not totally the case the last time we went to Huron.

Remember gas is only $2 a gallon when you cruise with a friend and share expenses!
 Biff Matthews
'08 CWHYC Fleet Captain

SUNSHINE:
It was great to see everyone at the Derby party. Great job Ed, Betty Brewer and crew. The drinks, band, food was well planed. Congratulation to Sue Smeach for second place. Thank you for picking my hat for first place.
It was nice to see Marty Schott up and around.
Tim Atves is going into surgery this Friday the 9th instead of the 14th.
Sandy Athanas is doing well and hanging in there.
Connie you need to be more careful and stay on your feet.
Dan Holan is back (drinking beer) welcome back Dan.

Ted and Sandy Athanas son Chris is back from Iraq and hopefully he won't have to go back.
If you have not heard, we have one of our own leaving soon for Iraq P/C John brewer with his coast guard reserve. Take care and come back soon.
When doing your spring cleaning if you come across any items that are no long valuable to you please keep the club in mind for there garage sale. It could be somebody else's treasure.
Can't wait to see all of you at the membership meeting May 17th
Wishing all the mothers a Mother's Day filled with all the good things that mean the most to you.
Sharon Barack

HEAD TRUSTEE:

I have not started any of the summer projects. But if anyone has expertise in plumbing and would like to get their work hours in…please contact me at 440-409-2514 or see me at the club. I have several projects that need to be completed.

The commodore would like to eliminate the expense of the storage garage so during the next few weeks I will also be looking for a work crew to sort through the “stuff” we currently have in storage and move it into the club. Hopefully it will be a manageable amount to move.

Head Trustee,
Bill Brello

MEMBERSHIP:

The 2008 roster has been finalized and is in the process of being printed. I hope to have them distributed in the next few weeks. We currently have 57 paid members.  We lost quite a few memberships due to retirement and economic conditions. 2008 will be a difficult year and recruitment of new members must be a continued priority for the future of CWHYC.

Hope everyone had a great time on Derby Day. Though it might have been more profitable for the “ladies” if someone (Bill) hadn’t stolen our horse during the auction, I still had a good time.  Two thumbs up for the band…they did a great job. I believe we’ll be hearing them again later this year.

Please mark your calendars for May 17th. This is the date of our fist membership meeting. I hope to see all of you there.

Sincerely,
Shari Brello, Membership

                THE WESTWIND

                           APRIL 2008

 COMMODORE

A big thank you to everyone that helped make the 2008Commodore's Ball a success. A thank you to Terre for the decorations, Johnny K for the music and most of all John Brewer for all the work and preparations in setting up the Ball to make it go so smoothly. I also want to thank all the club members that could attend. We held our first Bridge meeting of the New Year, and your officers are working hard to make sure this year is packed with events. The calendar is all set up for the major events and will be ready for you soon. The trustees are working on repairs and new projects to make the club a better place. As I said in March several people showed up for the cleaning day so that the club is ready to open.
As soon as the club is open for spring and everyone has their boats in the water, I   would like to get the storage unit cleaned out and avoid future rent. My first big concern for the club is MEMBERSHIP. If you know of anyone that may be interested in joining our club, PLEASE bring them into our facility, show them around, bring them to a function, and talk to them about joining. With the gas prices the way they are for the summer, use the line." that if you can not use your boat and go out on the lake, come to our club and enjoy the summer with us." We have a wonderful club and so many great members; so let's show others what it is all about. Thank you again for the Ball.

  Kathy Schaefer

 VICE COMMODORE

The Commodore’s Ball of 2008 is history now.  However, if you go to www.cwhyc.org and click on pictures (4th from the left on top blue bar) you will see pictures of this ball.  We all had a great time and had 15 clubs that honored Commodore Kathy with their attendance. The Kentucky Derby Party is our first major event of the season.  This year we are adding a Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner following the race and live music following dinner (Razor Sharp Objects from Toledo).  Be sure to bring all your friends and relatives. The calendar for this season is attached.  Call me (440-452-3815 or www.genemckeown@oh.rr.com) if you have any questions.  Every Saturday in April, we will have Club Grub Lunch in the bar.  Friday nights from May to Sept. we will offer Club Grub.  It will be available whenever you arrive on Friday.
If we can find a cook, we will offer Sunday breakfast every Sunday from June to Sept.  This could be a good “gig” for someone that wants to pick up extra income for the summer.  Call me if you know of anyone.  If we can’t find a cook, then we will hold several breakfasts throughout the season.  This is always a good way to get in your work hours.  A new food serving counter will be completed this month in the dining room.  It will make meal set up and serving much easier.     (CONT)
Is anyone interested in doing a pig roast or wild game dinner this year??  Also, we will participate in the Harbor Estates yard sale this summer – does anyone know when it will be held?
As always, Connie and I are looking forward to seeing you at the Club.

Gene McKeow

  REAR COMMODORE

Welcome Back to the Harbor!!  As we have all been busy getting out boats and cottages ready for the summer, the bridge has also busy getting the club ready for another fun and exciting year.  We will begin with the annual derby day party on May 3 with the race being shown on the big screen followed by the music of Razor Sharp Objects.   Call me crazy, but there may even be a mint julep or two consumed that day.  Come enjoy the fun and participate in the horse auction if you care to try your luck at the ponies.  I am told that the Brello syndicate has already been making plans for another successful derby.

I am still looking for bar tenders to help work a shift at the derby party.  This is an excellent way to earn your service hours while having fun with fellow club members.  After the derby the bar will be open as usual for the summer. We have some excellent events planned, so why not come on down and invite some of your friends to join us for an evening or two.  They will start out as guests, but will soon become part of the family!

MEMBERSHIP

We will soon be starting the 2008 season. Our membership will again enjoy dinners, dances, cruises (both land and sea), reciprocal benefits with other clubs and numerous theme events.  Since membership continues to be a critical issue for the club this year, each and every one of us should spread the word about the advantages of CWHYC.

I have received most of everyone’s renewal for 2008. If you have not yet sent yours in, please do so as soon as possible to keep your membership current. Please also remember to complete and return the membership renewal form in order for us to publish the correct information in the 2008 roster. It’s also very important to supply us with a current e-mail address since this has been a successful means of communication for us.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon,

Shari Brello

A HUGE THANK YOU TO TERRE MATTHEWS FOR THE DONATION OF THE RIDING COOLER.THE COOLER WAS RAFFLED AT THE COMMODORES BALL, WON BY RITA KOEPHER, AND RAISED OVER $600.TO HELP OFFSET THE BALL EXPENSES. THANKS TERRE!

 FLEET CAPTAIN

Well, you’re stuck with me as your fleet captain pro tem for a third year!  I’m proud to serve our club again and my thanks to Commodore Kathy and Fleet Captain John for asking me to step in.

As most know John Brewer, the person you elected fleet captain, is being deployed to the Middle East in late spring.  Our prayers go with him.

John had the cruises set up plus asked members to help so most of the work is done.

Cruise sign up sheets were at the Commodore’s Ball.  They will be posted the weekend of April 19th at the club in the hall to the left of the bar. Please write legibly and include e-mail address and best telephone number for contacting the captain.  Sign up early as the marinas ask for boat information at least two weeks before a scheduled cruise.

CWHYC Cruises:
May 31    Huron Boat Basin
July 12    Dinghy Poker Run
August 9    Ford Yacht Club (coincides with the AYC Poker Run)
September 6    Leamington Municipal Marina
October 11    PIBYC for Oktoberfest

Cruising to Canada requirements in the next issue.

Captain’s meeting by conference call Thursday evening before each cruise that I can arrange plus e-mail information the week before the cruise.

As in the past please bring snacks or hors d’oeuvres to share on the dock, the $10 per couple refreshment fee for the club to provide the meat and breakfast pastries then new last year, BYOB.
Several cruisers noted they prefer to leave Friday afternoon or evening.  If a member will step forward and lead Friday’s flotilla, I’ll bring up the rear with the Saturday group.
Last year I called weather cancellations yet this year I promise to be more adventuresome and rather than not going we may go once it lies down.
Expect some cruises to simply anchor out and have a good time
Remember gas this year is only $2 a gallon for those that cruise . . . . . sharing expense with other members and friends.
Last, John arranged a surprise for the Dinghy Poker Run that I’ll keep close to the vest as long as I can.
Let’s cruise.  For each adult couple guest that is a potential member accompanying a member on a club cruise your fleet will provide the captain with a six-pack of their favorite beer.  FREE beer!

 SUNSHINE

I hear that Tim Atves is going in for surgery May 14th our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We have two members who are going to retire this summer. My husband George and Bill Brello. Retirement is like a long vacation in Las Vegas. The goal is to enjoy it the fullest, but not so fully that you run out of money. Good Luck to them. Shari good luck to you to. Retirement: That's when he returns from work one day and say, "Hi, Honey, I'm home - forever."
It was a great time at the commodore's Ball. Great Job John & Celenea Brewer and Terre & Biff Matthews. Thank you to Bill Brello for donating his winnings to the club in the 50/50 raffle. Also thank you to the people who donated the basket, bottle of scotch and wine for the other prizes.
Congratulations to Dave White in earning the Jug Head award who lost his Jet boat on the highway. Also to John Brewer and Henry Kleinhenz for getting the Boner all I have to say is do not put hot ashes in the dumpster and Celenea for the seatbelt.
No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.
Happy Spring. It is that time to clean those boats, "wax on was off" Can't wait to see everyone.

Sharon Barack
 HEAD TRUSTEE

By the time you receive this, hopefully the club will be open for the season. Earlier this year we had a group of volunteer club members help get the club ready for the year by washing, dusting and polishing.  There are many projects planned for this summer.  As they become organized I will post work sign-up sheets as needed. If there’s anything you feel needs attention, please contact any of the trustees (Charles, Shorty, George, Dan or myself). Each year we have a problem with heat and air conditioning early in the year. Please bear with us as the weather transitions from cold to warmer temperatures and we will try to adjust accordingly. This will be difficult to do if everyone keeps changing the thermostat. Please be patient.

Head Trustee,
Bill Brello
  ANNOUNCEMENTS

We will have Club Grub available for lunch every Sat. in April beginning this Sat.  When you need a break - stop in for a bite and a rest.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the soup/sauce heater that was in the kitchen please return it. It is important that we have it for events.
Anyone interested in group benefits with Boat US will need the following group number when completing the application.  The group number for the CWHYC is GA81953Y.  This will give you a half price membership with benefits such as rebates at West Marine, discounts at marinas nationwide on fuel, repairs and overnight slips, on-the-water towing service, marine insurance and much more.

COMMODORE

How great it was to see the crowd that took part in the Dinghy Poker run. It looked like the old days and it seemed all had a good time. Connie is talking about maybe adding a dinghy "scavenger hunt". Those McKeown's are always thinking.

The Summer Fest was a big success. We learned alot about what to do in the future. Thanks to all who worked. And thanks to the McKeowns for there planning and execution of the event.

I hope everyone is noticing all the guests we have been having. It seems that our club is becoming a place to gather and relax. Remember that these people need to be made to feel at home. That's up to all of us.

This weekend we will be having "Head's Spaghetti". You don't want to miss that. Also, we have extended an invitation to the members of Middle Bass Island Y/C to join us. Let's make them feel they want to return.

On a serious note. Alot of the tension that came with the new club is fading. One thought, when in the lounge in the evening, let's think before we speak.

Enjoythe rest of the season and stay active!

  REAR COMMODORE

July 28, 2007 was a significant day for the new home of CWHYC. On this day we ran our first annual Summer Fest. We partnered with the Gem Beach Lot Owner's Association. They made and sold brats, hot dogs and hamburger dinners and we sold other food items. We also hosted kid's activities and, of course, operated two bars. We brought in a band that played from 7 to 11. Mary Kishmarten ran a very successful raffle. Estimates are that between 250 and 300 people attended. Dave Michael reports that it was a very profitable event for the club. Thanks to all of you that signed up for the various jobs and thanks to you that volunteered once you got to the club. This event should prove to all that we are very capable of managing a big event, maybe even a return to the successful regattas of our past. Be sure to check the dry erase board behind the hot dog machine for new items and pricing. The Columbus Power Squadron Sea Gals will be in the club the weekend of Aug. th 17th and 18 . I understand that there will be Karaoke one night. Be sure to make them feel welcome. On Saturday Aug. 11 th Tom Head will be preparing his world famous and most excellent firehouse spaghetti. We have invited the members of MBIYC as our special guests. Be sure to stop in and meet these fellow boaters. One more fish fry is planned. We will fish for perch and we will need as many fishermen and boats as possible. Contact myself or Dan Holan if you are
th interested. We would like to fish on Aug. 25 In closing, Connie and I would like to thank all of you that worked so hard to make Summer Fest a success. We should be proud of what we accomplished.

Gene McKeown

    TRESURER

Thank you everyone who participated in our Summer Fun Fest last month. We made a nice profit thanks to your help. We have some nice events coming up this month, and everyone is invited to come and bring guests. During these lazy, hazy days of summer come in and enjoy the air conditioning with a cold beverage. Better yet, bring a guest and invite them to join CWHYC. We have a lot of activities yet to come this year including the Ohio State football season beginning September 1.

Have you bought a CWHYC Note for $1,000 or $500? See me to purchase your note. See you at your club and remember to bring your friends and prospective members.

David Michael

 FLEET CAPTAIN

Dinnhy Poker Run - Approximately 30 dinghies with about 65 people participated in this year's event. T-hanks to my wife, Terre, for her help, Bob & Heidi Rowe and their grandchildren, MBIYC members Ed & Martha Kramer along with John Schaefer & Ted Athanas. Thanks too to Kathy and John Schaefer for putting together the food following opening of the cards plus extremely causal, Dave White for the PA system and his ever rousing rallying of the troops-
Dinghy Poker Run T-Shirts in popular sizes are still available from Kathy Schaefer for $12.

If you see any of these people or Cindy at the State Dock Restaurant or Debbie at Crabby Joes, say thanks-

Kevin Baron had the winning hand of four 8's, followed by Heidi Rowe with a full house of Aces and 3's. Tom & Karen Hlavin were third, also with a full house of Jacks and 2s-

After expenses and payout the club netted about $120.

Definitely a good time was had by all with no boat sunk, no one a threat to homeland security, and no one arrested, plus everyone made it to the opening of the cards. My thanks also, to the 62 people that signed up making planning easier, plus those that either e-mailed or called me-

Leaminaton Cruise, Sept 7-9 - July's WestWind had about everything you needed to know to make the cruise and returning to the states relatively hassle free. Again, passport or certified birth certificate for each passenger, along with a US Custom's sticker for the boat. You have time before the cruise to obtain both. The US Immigration videophones are at P-1-13 and Brands Dry Dock, Port Clinton

Most everyone cruising to Leamington wants to leave Friday afternoon or evening. PC John Brewer and I will coordinate departure times, as I know one boat is unable to leave until Saturday morning.

This is Big Ten weekend at Leamington so THE games will be on.

Reiterating $40 dock deposit if you've not cruised with CWHYC yet this season, plus $10 refreshment fee to cover some food. Too, BYOB (bring your own beer or booze) plus a snack to share on the dock Saturday around 1:00 pm.

The End - This IS my last year as Fleet Captain and it's been a learning experience. I appreciate everyone's patience and help. It's been fun and I hope you had fun too.

MEMBERSHIP

We have received an application from Al and Rhonda Martin of Berea, Ohio for social membership in CWHYC. They are sponsored by Gene and Connie McKeown. I know that current members will remember to introduce themselves to new people and help make everyone feel comfortable in the club and at events.

It seems we have had a summer of "visiting guests" and "old friends" coming into the clubhouse. On any given weekend I can see members mingling with non-members. I guess this really does show that we truly are "the friendliest little yacht club on the lake". Since membership growth is a priority of the club... I -would like to personally thank everyone who goes out of their way (or just acts naturally 0) to make everyone feel welcome at CWHYC.

Sincerely,

Shari Brello, Membership

 OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST

Biffs Breakfast Bunch - Sunday, August 19th 8:00 am to 1:00 pm (note later timeO - buttermilk pancakes and multi-grain cakes plus cherry, chocolate and blueberry toppings, eggs plain and fancy, sausage, potatoes, fruit, coffee, milk & juice for $7.00 per person. We're planning on a large crowd both before and after church.

Menu Book - To help visitors, guests and new members locate a local restaurant; to the extreme right of the bar is a white, three ring binder labeled Menus that contains menus of several area restaurants. The list if far, far from complete with ample room for more. Check out the book then as you dine out pick up a menu or two to add. Please insert one menu per clear sleeve so it shows front and back.

SEX and MONEY - Got your attention. Your mother isn't employed by CWHYC to clean up after you so as mom said, "Pick up after yourself dear." Bar, bathroom, shower and kitchen all need your attention when you use them. It's your club; respect it as you would your home.

Crusin Cooler - Still not in yet. Tickets are available from Terre Matthews, $5 each, 6 for $25; ONLY 200 to be sold. Need not be present to win. Cooler must be picked up by winner. Drawing at the October CWHYC Annual Meeting (if enough tickets are sold between now and then)

TRUSTEE NEWS

A new photo cell spotlight, donated by Marty Schott, is being installed on the deck, to light the flagpole. Thanks, Marty.

The entrance way will be tiled next week by Tom Head and myself. The tile was purchased with monies collected in the lounge tip jars. This should really add to the entrance.

The mural is up, thanks to Connie McKeown and Dorothy Holan. A big thank-you to Betty Brewer for purchasing the mural. It looks great.

They have talked me into one more fish fry, of coursel It will be held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Fishing for that dinner will be on the 25th of August. ALL who can go out and get some fish will be appreciated. Contact myself or Gene McKeown if you can go out and hook a few! The fries am always a big success.

COMMMODORE

July 4th is gone and summer is moving along at quite a fast pace. Still there seems to be alot of members whom I haven't had the pleasure of meeting. Well now is the chance. On July 28th the club will be hosting our first SUMMER FEST. We are hoping to draw a few hundred people. If we do, this event needs Everyone's help. The e-mail I sent to the membership asking for that help received four replies! If this club is to be self supportive, this has to turn around. As a member, each of you should feel that you are a part of these events. We cannot be successful as a club without total participation! There are many areas where you can help out on that afternoon or evening. Please let the bridge know if you are available. Contact Gene McKeown or myself. Our e-mails; and phone numbers are in the roster.

Due to this lack of participation, the Turkey Fry on the 21 st of July has been canceled. Dan Holan does a great fry, and I for one feel it is a shame that he could not get a few helpers. Thanks Dan for the effort! Hope we can do it next year.

I look forward to the rest of the summer and do hope to see more faces.

We am planning a major event for Saturday, the 28~ of July. It is being called Summer Fest and will staA at 4:00PM and run until midnight, Other clubs, as well as the cottages, are invited and we expect 200 to 300 to attend, This will be our major fund raiser for the summer, There will be plenty of good food and drinks as well as live music to keep us entertained, We will need volunteers to help work it, so don't be surprised if you get a call. THIS IS A VERY IMPOTRANT EVENT AND WE ARE COUNTING ON YOUR ATTENDANCE.

The bowling machine is now working as well as the new kid's game, Both are located in the lounge on the first floor, These games as well as the juke box and the bar top game all take bills or quarters to run, We split the"take" with the company that provides them and I would expect that by the end of the season they will generate $400 to $500 for us.

Let me know if there is something you would like to have added to the bar stock, I will do the best I can to add it and I'll let you know if I can't

As usual, Connie and I look forward to
seeing you at the

Leamington in September

I understand that the number of people cruising to Leamington is down substantially due to the status of required documentation along with being stopped upon entering US waters from Canada. It isn't a hassle if you're prepared. 1 . The requirement for passports has been put an temporary hold through 2007 while the government catches up. If you don't have a passport, your birth certificate or a certified copy is acceptable and in some instances a valid drNW9 license has been accepted. 2. An 1-68 is NOT a requirement as long as everyone on the boat reports in to immigration using thevideo phone either at the Municipal Dock at Put-In-Bay or behind Brands Dry Dock Manna, ne)d to Mr. Eds. To report in everyone must have a passport or birth certificate aridlor sometimes your drivers license will suffice. 3. A custom sticker is required that you may obtain on line at www.cpb.q Go to www.cbp.gav from any PC with a browser. Click on the "Travel" tab, at top of page. Click an 'User Fee DecaJ Program". Click on "Apply Online for Decal", on right side of page. Login using your User ID and Password in the Login Section. From the Welcome Page', select Renewals or Saved Purchases.

You will then be presented with a page that displays all of the most recent renewal forms that we have on file. Click on a Reference Number for the form (decals) you wish to renew, you will then be presented with a pre-filled form showing the information you provided us last year. This form looks very similar to the paper renewal application you will receive. You can change, update or add information. Follow the instructions provided on the scieef to purchase decals. If you have any questions, please cal (317) 29&1245 or send an e-mail to decals@dha.gov. 4. That takes about 2-3 weeks or can be purchased at US Customs at the Sandusky Co Airport between Sandusky and Huron an old Rt 2. The customs agent is supposed to be in during normal business hours, M-F, but call ahead to see if the officer is in before going as the agent is out more than in. 5. If stopped, the boarding party usually asks a the same questions as when reporting into Canada: is everyone a US citizen, purchase or in possession of drugs, alcohol, tobacco products as well as other Canadian purchases plus they typically conduct a quick safety inspection and want to see your custom sticker or a copy of the application. Not a big deal if you am prepared and legal in the first place

The July 4th cruise to Anchor Point and Kellys Island was great. Cool, comfortable and breezy. Wind and waves made for a sloppy return home on Sunday by some plus an equally sloppy dde to Kelly's Island for the remainder on Monday.

The Bilge Bar at the Dock House had a band Saturday night the got the group dancing. I counted ten groups of fireworks that we could see between Detroit to Toledo. Sunday following dinner we were treated to a small boat being towed not making it going on the break-wall rocks necessitating the retrieval from the rocks of its three occupants by Tow BOATUS. I learned later that the boat attempting the tow took on so much water in the process that I almost sank in the marina and had to be lifted at midnight that night to prevent it from going under. Both the boat on the rock and the one attempting the tow had top of the line fish finders, but not one radio.

Eight bots with 18 people made Anchor Point along with the Kishmarlon's making the drive on Saturday for reteshments and dinner. Four boats with 8 people made Kellys Island and were joined by the Holans and guests an Monday altemoon.

TREASURER

It just seems like we put the boats in the water, now it is July. Where does the time go? We have had a lot of events so farth is year, and we have a lot of events scheduled for the remainder of the year. Why not share your club with friends?

In order for this club to be viable, we need everyone's participation. We also need everyone to bring prospective members. More people can only translate into more fun for everyone.

A club with a facility our size needs at least 125 members. We need to be actively working for that number every week. Until we reach that number, we have asked members to purchase CWHYC notes in either $500 or $1000 denominations that pay interest at a rate of 8%. You receive your interest in CWHYC money that can be used to pay for events, clothing or at the bar,

The Bridge is also beginning to look at other options to reduce the operating expenses of the club. One may be a major fund raising program where members could contribute to pay off our mortgage early. Another option may be to refinance our mortgage within the club. Please give me your thoughts and input. David Michael, Treasurer

MEMBERSHIP

We have received 2 new applications for membership in CWHYC. Tony and Jacquee Rutherford of Marblehead have applied for a full membership. They are sponsored by Jack and Susie Feudner. Alan and Jen Martin of Olmsted Township have submitted an application for social membership. Alan and Jen are sponsored by Gene and Connie McKeown. Please reach out to new members and guests and make all feel welcome in our club. Introduce yourself to an "unfamiliar face". They could very well become one of your best friends!

Since we have had several visiting guests from Middle Bass Yacht Club, I would like to remind everyone that Middle Bass is a reciprocating yacht club in I-LYA and their members are welcome to visit CWHYC. Their club is in transition right now and we should really make an effort to make them feel comfortable.

Sincerely,
Shari Brello, Membership
